We all woke up Wednesday morning knowing just what to expect, dusted off the spandex and fleece, located our wool caps, gloves and face mask, duct taped our inner thighs, put the XL jersey back on the shelf cause we all know the L fits and looks good, threw out the empties found in our paddle bag from last season, sharpened the edges of every other paddle hole (to do every one would be just plain ridiculous), cracked a half dozen raw eggs into our coffee, downed a toaster waffle and some skittles, kissed the dog goodbye, told our wives not to wait up but I’ll call you at midnight just to wake you up and let you know how we did , threw the ice scraper into the rear seat and the tire chains in the trunk, pulled out of the garage and screamed “Put me on court 1 cause I was born to play paddle” and then the alarm clock caught our eye, it’s 3am and just another paddle dream. 10 more hours until game time!

We peeled off layer after layer cause it was 60 degrees and no wind at Glenview – it was snowing somewhere in the Arctic though!

Ct 1 had Warner / Eddie against Baccich/Seaman. Our guys claim to be re-united from their days at SIU where according to each other they played doubles. After some careful research before going to press it was learned they were all-conference for the local high school using fake IDs as exchange students from Manitoba – where they claim to have invented paddle. Seemed good enough for Cappy, as they dismantled their opponents in two solid sets. 6-3, 6-4. A good tune-up for weeks to come. GE 3 GV 0. Man the Harp tastes good!

Ct 2 had A-Train / Foster against Landman / Cappy Rowe. Unannounced to anyone else, A-Train showed up with a purpose and planned to play the smartest paddle of his career while Foster played 5 sets of tennis in the morning, ran a half-marathon over lunch, and threw in the P-90X tape in the afternoon to stay warm. We tried an interesting tactic in the first by seeing how high and hard off the screens we could hit our overheads. Down 3-6, A-Train remained calm and steady, serving like the exchange students on court 1, he steadied Foster to take the second and a crucial point for GE. 6-3. GV buckled down in the third resorting to pure paddle and consistent depth on the lobs taking out Foster’s legs in the process. A couple more minutes on the tread mill and we would have had them but not tonight 2-6. Cappy was proud that we fought for the 1 point to give GE the edge into the second half of the night. GE 4 GV 3.

Ct 3 had Sojka (pronounced Swoyks) / Suarez (pronounced Suarez) against Blanchard/Wilson. This was the match of the night. GE team looking for their first win together. Andrew looking for his first win – as a paddle husband. Congrats! The first set could not be any closer as GE builds a 4-1 lead to see it disappear and lost in a tie-break 6-7. This is when most of us get a bit tight. But not these boys. They continue talking to each other and build another 4-1 lead. GV gets it back to 4-3, but GE is now working too well together not to get 1 point for the second, 6-3. Swoyks beer is filled and Suarez makes the mandatory call home for a first year hubby. The crowd got thicker and even Alan Graham said our boys could really play paddle! We would not be denied in the third as Swoyks is just too much and Andrew just enough 6-3. GE 7 GV 4.

Ct 4 had the famous GE duo Park / Snyder against Lawler/Huber. You can never stop fundraising for the GE Platform Tennis Hut. The GE duo talk GV into putting a bet down on the number of games each team would win. Say no more – just open your checkbooks lads! We need a stone fireplace and some asphalt. GE 6-0 6-0 Baby. In the words of Mr Park…LETS GO! GE 10 GV 4 and the season has started. You guys deserve a beer and thanks of many in GE for your hard work on and off the court!

On to Skokie next week where we hear they are unveiling 2300 sqft of new paddle hut and 16 beers on tap (reduced to 3 after the first budget meeting).

This edition of Series 8 weekly features a recap of GE's expedition to the great white north (at least it felt like we drove to Canada) of Lake Forest followed by whats to come.

Wednesday was a great day in all of our lives, the sun was shining, the birds were chirping, but more importantly...PADDLE SEASON HAS BEGUN!!!! The night before the first match of the season leaves different players with different issues. Some cant sleep the night before as they continue to go through each point in their head, others might sleep in their paddle gear with paddle in hand dreaming of points, and others continue on as usual, although slightly antsy to get this season under way. With a last minute management change, Pagey Jr. was thrown into the harness as the fearless cappy of the GE Bandits (name pending, now taking submissions). With our first battle ahead of us, the usual pre-match planning (a beer at ellyns) had everyone excited to use their battle axes (paddles) to decapitate the enemy. Talk of paddle strategy, and maybe some butterflies, filled the car on our journey north. 2 of our commrades couldnt ride the front lines with us as they drove themselves as Cory had a meeting with Wilson to sponser the bandits and Winthorpe obviously had to take his Bently limo, although i thought he might fly his helicopter. Arriving a half hour early we took to the courts to get loose as we waited for the classy North Shorians.

On battlefield 1, Bushman and Digger had their hands full from the start as the Lake Forest combo continued to attack Bush on the screens, time after time while Chuck took cat naps here and there on the ad court waiting for a chance to strike, at one point he might have even taken a bathroom break. A couple points here and there and the match would've been theres, they go down 4-6, 5-7. To the hut for an ice cold Steigal and some italian beef sammys.

Battlefield 2, Lucky Lucchesiano and Cappy Jr. took on two guys who were around when paddle was invented as they told us when they started playing the series were lettered, not numbered. These two guys had an unorthodox playing style which kept many of our points very short, our longest point might have had 13 hits. Lucky was getting picked on with their overheads, but time after time held his ground, making them make the error. It was a back and forth kind of match with no team able to develop momentum. Games going back and forth, breaking serve, holding serve, we win a game, they win one right back. At 5-4 in the 3rd set, we had a chance to close them out so we could join the party, but the elderly couple wasnt going down without a fight, holding their serve to make it 5-5. Before the next game Lucky and Cappy Jr. gave each other the nod as if to mentally say, enough of the bullshit, lets put them out of their misery, winning the next two games and placing the dagger in their heart. 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. Now the party can start

Battlefield 3 consisted of the GE rookie squad of Louis Winthorpe IV (Chris) and the newest de la Cruz to touch a paddle, Edgar. The butterflies in Edgar's stomach were flappin hard before this match as his younger brother, Eddie, made it clear, DONT RUIN OUR FAMILY NAME. As the match started, LF knew they were going to have their hands full with Chris's serve, as he lined up a handful of aces in the first few games, coupled with a handful of faults. Chris's power game was Federer like, driving balls past these guys leaving them puzzled. Edgars soft hands and soft overheads were perfectly placed winning them many points. Put on the spot to play the ad court, Edgar held his own incredibly well although still showed signs of apprehension of playing the ball off the screens. A few more weeks and he'll be smooth as butter on the ad court. Another back and forth match that would be decided by a third set, however things fell apart for our rookie duo in the third as Lake Forest layed the smack down to close it out. 4-6, 6-4, 1-6. Get these guys a beer, they deserve it.

Battlefield 4 had a lot of Spring in their step as they Flooded the opponent (good one, i know), as Cory and Dan, another rookie, took to the courts against what looked like some great tennis players. But as we all know, tennis only gets you so far in paddle and the screens will be the death of you if you dont learn them. This played to Dan and Cory's advantage as they pounded their rookie counterparts. The straight set win on court 4 was one of the biggest of the night as it gave us the 3 points we needed while giving LF NONE. Promptly after getting their butts kicked, LF's ct. 4 team rushed inside and returned with a beer for Dan and Cory, now thats what i call service.

All in all, great night gents. Got those first match jitters out, now the fun begins. Next week we travel to Lake Shore Country Club to do 2 things, Drink some beer and kick some ass. They better hope they dont run out of beer..

This year will be the best ever for Platform Tennis in Glen Ellyn! For everybody who has been on the fence about trying this game out, this is the year. We now have 4 courts and a warming/viewing hut at Marynoll Park to accommodate everyone. This will be the new hot spot in Glen Ellyn to come out and meet your winter neighbors, learn this great game, and enjoy friendly competition outdoors!

To help kick off the season please come out for a free clinic and intro to Platform Tennis on September 17, 1-4pm, sponsored by area pros with the PPTA followed by an open house party. Details will be announced soon.

Warming Hut back on Track!!!

Many have heard and used the phrase, “It’s a great day for paddle” regardless of what the weather had in store for us at that moment. We all know that this game is unique in its competitive nature and yet the extremely high level of camaraderie that comes at all levels. Many new friendships have been created through this game…

Well – we’ve got some very exciting news to share at this time… all of which will help to forge many new friendships…

Glen Ellyn WILL have a paddle hut to call its own this 2011/2012 season and beyond. Thanks to the efforts of many throughout this long and arduous process, we have finally come to a point where the Park District Board has become wholly comfortable with our efforts and fundraising, and thus this past Tuesday at the monthly board meeting, voted in favor of continuing forward with construction.

Here are the specifics as it relates to the numbers…

Park District: $200,000 total commitment ($50,000 initially and $150,000 to pay off the line that the GEPTC is carrying through 2013)

GEPTC: $195,150

This is made up of the following:

1) Initial fund raised monies of $153,650 which included all players’ donations and matches.

2) $10,000 anonymous contribution

3) $5,000 grant from the American Platform Tennis Association

4) $5,000 donation from Athletico (any physical therapy needs – Athletico is now the preferred destination)

5) $21,500 additional contribution from the GEPTC – this piece is made up of…

a. $10,000 commitment from GEPTC back in March of 2011

b. $6,500 additional commitment from GEPTC in July of 2011

6) A GEPTC board member has as well put up an additional $14,678 in a contingency fund as requested by the PD board. GEPTC will stay very close to construction to be certain that we do not need to tap into this…

All that said – you will see that the PD has truly partnered with us on this project in that they are taking upon more than half of the project cost. This entire process has netted us an additional 2 courts and a great quality hut. We believe that this will lead to phenomenal opportunities for growth going forward. Start talking it up with your friends and get new people out there to give this game a try.

Chuck has worked hard to get us another 2 teams in the Chicago league for a total of 7, so those of you that played in the in-house league this past season, look to make the next step to your involvement in the game by looking to sign up for a travel team. There’s certainly a great chance that we’ll be hosting matches this year at all levels. Certainly, more to come from Chuck and the team Captains, but we have spots for approx 90 guys so if you want to play you will play!

There will be a free PPTA clinic on Saturday, September 17^th as shown in your PD brochure. Time is 1-4pm – be sure to come on out for this… There will be top level pros and a high quality exhibition of top ranked national players. This is a great way to get your season started.

FUNDRAISING: You can see that the GEPTC has been put on the hook for $21,500 in order to keep this project moving forward… We need your help! There were many that were very generous in their donations and many that likely just missed out on the opportunity to do so the first time around. We ask everyone that is a part of this paddle community to again consider some form of donation. Each person/family/business that contributes will be recognized in permanence at the hut. Be a part of the foundation that helped to create this ‘second jewel’ of Glen Ellyn. We’re going to have a great hut no doubt, but the more that we can raise above the $21,500; the more like Sunset Ridge or Glenview or Winnetka we can make our hut. Let’s get the effort rolling to blow past the $21,500. No donation is too small or too large, of course.

Lastly – in line with fundraising, we’re looking at having a pre-season paddle party that we’ll be sending information on to each person/family in the coming weeks – please be on the lookout for this.

Inaugural GETPC Tournament

WHEN: Friday April 8^th – Sunday April 10^th 2011

WHERE: Glen Ellyn Platform Tennis Courts – Maryknoll Park

ENTRY DEADLINE: Tuesday April 5^th, 2011

COST: $75 Entry Fee per Team – MAKE CHECK PAYABLE TO GEPTC. Proceeds go towards Safety Village and GEPTC Hut.

FORMAT: All teams will be guaranteed 3 matches. Matches will run all day Saturday, with Semi-Finals and Finals being held on Sunday. Teams may select partner of their choice, regardless of series level, however a handicap will be given to each team to level the playing field.

WOMEN – A woman’s open will be held Friday April 8^th (barring interest) at whatever time is most convenient for all those playing.

MEN – Based on the number of entries, there could be two draws for men.

**Following play Saturday there will be a party for all Paddle players on Saturday night. Location is still TBD.

This is a year ending tournament for all Glen Ellyn players, Travel and House. Glen Ellyn had a great showing at all series this year, so come out for one last hoorah before summer!

2011 GEPD House League kick off season

The 2011 GEPD House League begins it's 10 week season on January 3. Play is every Monday night from 7:00 - 10:00 and is formated as Team play. We have 6 teams and 30 players that will fight for the top seed going into the playoffs that will occur in mid-March.

2009 league winners were the Six Shooters consisting of Paul Peterson, Charlie Pfister, Thom Giffin, Dan Minning, and Cory Springer.

Interesting fact: Of the 30 players from the 2009 house league, 20 of them are now playing on Glen Ellyn travel teams.

There is some exciting news to share with all of you.

The 2011 Nationals will be held in Chicago and use most all courts (not sure yet if they will reach out to Glen Ellyn). 550 players are expected. Save the dates March 10-13 on your calendars to either play or volunteer or watch!
The Men’s Series Tournament will be held Jan 15-16. Save those dates as this is a must for anybody Series 4-21.
The Chicago Charities Tournament will be held November 5-7. This is open to all players and is a national ranking tournament (NRT)
The topic came up again (it does every year) about splitting the league into North and South to limit the length and qty of travel. Eventually this will happen, we just need more courts in the South. Next year we know GE is adding 2 more, Midtown is adding 3, Hinsdale PD is adding 2. There will be others and they expect the League to keep growing by 20 teams each year. Their best guess is 3 years from now we will have North and South divisions.
For Glen Ellyn League play this year all the Hinsdale clubs have agreed to split the hosting of their matches with Glen Ellyn and this will show up on the schedule! We will have to reserve the courts for those nights in advance with the Park District. If it is a conflict we can always switch dates with the Hinsdale Club.
Here’s some real big news. They have finally agreed to do it! After this year, the nights will begin to rotate clockwise. Series 3,6,9,12,etc…will move from Thursday nights to Tuesday nights, Series 1,4,7,etc will move from Wednesday to Thursday, and Series 2,5,8,etc will move from Tuesday to Wednesday. Each year they will rotate 1 night clockwise.
Lastly, the Pros have been instructed to watch for foot faults. 90% of those who foot fault don’t know that they are doing it. The other 10% just get to net really fast! They are not going to penalize anybody and ruin anybody’s night, just make guys aware of the facts. (NRTs will have officiating during the later rounds, not the Series Tournament)

The season begins October 6^th or 7^th. Priority is given to returning players, players coming off injury, Glen Ellyn residents, and those who paid their dues. There should be plenty of new roster spots available and opportunities to play in a league match. The Captains will be organizing their rosters between now and the start of the season. There is plenty of time to get involved, time to practice, and meet the guys. The season continues through March (18 matches in total, then 2 weeks of playoffs). Dues this year for all League play is $200 per player. This includes league dues, $25 GEPTC dues, courts, food, and beverages. Any remaining balance goes to the fund the new courts and hut. Players only will have to pay dues if they play in 4 league matches or more. Otherwise, they only have to pay the $25 dues to the GEPTC which gets you on the roster, available to play and sub, an APTA membership (when you provide a valid email and address to your Captain), and you will receive Platform Tennis magazine (6 issues).

So, if you have not already been in contact with a Captain, please do so immediately. This Sunday, we will be sending out the rosters for each Series team. Being on a roster means you will have an opportunity to play, not a guarantee to play each week. The Captains will do their best to involve everybody over the season. Many of you have asked us where are we at? We have received pledges for $33,700 to date. All different levels of contribution are being pledged, from $100 on up, it all matters as we get closer to our goal of $50,000. Please keep in mind, that your donation is a 2 for 1 match, turning a pledge of $500 into $1500 for your club. Maybe your employer will match your pledge? It is tax a deductible 501 (c) (3) and you will receive a letter for tax purposes.

Save Sept the 18^th and come on out to the courts for the GEPD Paddle Social.

On the Park District agenda for September 21st

The GEPTC will be requesting approval from the Park District Commissioners for the plan outlined below at the September 21st meeting. Please come out and support our efforts to create a unique partnership between the GEPTC and GEPD for betterment of our community.
We are overall 60% of the way to reaching our goal of $50,000 to be matched 2 for 1 and then donated to the project for a multi-use facility (Safety Village class room and Platform Tennis warming/ viewing) and 2 additional courts (at a major discount).

Exciting Times!

We have some exciting news to share with you. We are very close to achieving our goal of a four court platform tennis facility. Thanks to the efforts of many on this list, the Glen Ellyn Park District (GEPD) will acquire two new platform tennis courts and begin construction on a new warming/viewing hut this year with your help. This building will also be used by the Safety Village in the summer months and will be positioned between the four courts. Let me explain how we got here:

Some of you on this list were involved in Glen Ellyn Platform Tennis from it’s infancy in 2005 and some of you may be just getting involved this year. We will all benefit from this. In January ’09 a group of enthusiasts from 2005 volunteered to form the Glen Ellyn Platform Tennis Club (GEPTC). It’s purpose to promote this sport in Glen Ellyn; to work in conjunction with the GEPD; to develop Men’s, Women’s, and Junior Programs; and to raise funds through donations, dues and league fees to be used for local tournaments and to cover a portion of the costs of a new, permanent warming/viewing hut and at least 2 additional courts. Platform tennis is a social, family, and community activity that requires this type of facility. The warming/viewing hut will be multipurpose and be used by the Safety Village in the summer months.

Scope of Project:

2 NEW Premier Platform Tennis courts - $116,000 installed. (A special one-time offer due to Chicago hosting the APTA National 2010-2011 Tournament saving us $25,000)

Platform Tennis/Safety Village warming/viewing hut – approximately $200,000

Fundraising:

Our immediate goal is $50,000 and will be matched 2 for 1 by various charitable sources up to $100,000.

The GEPD will contribute $50,000 that is included in the 2010 budget.

The GEPTC will shall secure a (3) year commercial loan of up to $150,000 to cover the remaining balance of the project. The GEPD will pay the principal balance due at the end of the (3) year load period

We are asking for an immediate pledge in the form of a check made payable to the Glen Ellyn Parks Foundation and sent to Scott Park at 693 N. Park Blvd. This is a 501(c)(3) tax deductable contribution registered with the IRS and the State of Illinois. This check will NOT be cashed until the full $50,000 is raised and the agreement with the GEPD is finalized by a formal vote. First ever Junior Tournament

This past Sunday we had our first JR paddle tournament. We had 8 players aged 9-11 compete. The format had the kids play 10 game pro sets against each other with the two teams with the most wins competing in the final.The kids played really hard,battled and showed improved skill with lots of very good points.
The final pitted Justin D/ Libby A against Olivia K/Beau W. In a tight final Justin D/ Libby A where victorious! Congratulations to our JR tournament winners. A special thanks to Anthony McPherson, our paddle pro, who has all of the kids playing at a much higher level than where they started just a few short weeks ago. Attached are some pictures of the kids and the tournament winners.

We will have one more JR tourney in the Spring.

The Park District house league is finally here!

Monday Night League
The Park District offers weekly match play for Men and Woman of all skill levels and is geared for those who want to gain experience in organized play. Advanced players will be on hand to offer valuable tips and strategy for you to improve your game. This program is great for entry level and recreational players and is all about having fun playing paddle in the winter. Play will be on Monday nights January through March. Players provide their own paddle. To play in the league, players must also join the paddle tennis program offered by the Park District. Cost for league play event is only $20! Sign up deadline is January 6, 2010 and play begins January 11, 2010, 7:00 – 10:00 pm.

Under clear Skies with little wind the temp was in the low 20's for the first JR paddle clinic. A perfect night for paddle.

Even though it was the coldest evening of the year our 11 paddlers had a blast learning the game and playing

We drilled the new paddlers for an hour and half and then retreated to the trailer for Pizza and Root Beer. Afterwards the paddlers wanted to keep going so we had round robbin matches for another hour plus! Overall they played for almost 2 and half hours!

Series 12 vs. Glenview

Team 12 heads up to Golf, Illinois (if that isn’t heaven then there must be place called Paddle, Illinois – let me know where that is) to play the second place Glen View team. Our team is amped up and ready to play hard and dislodge the north shore team. Pulling into the club, the golf clubhouse could be the Augusta of paddle and the hut is an architectural compliment to the entire club featuring a stone fireplace and full bar. Upper 40’s, little wind, and a light drizzle from time to time – a perfect night for paddle.

Court 1 pairs up Swinney and Vinnie again vs. Ball and Patterson. Vinnie is pleasantly surprised that the taps are flowing when we arrive so he can properly lubricate before, during and after the match. In the first set, both teams hold serve all the way to 6-5 (good guys) and GE breaks their serve to win 7-5. Not to repeat last weeks mistake of only one can of swing oil during the match, Vinnie goes for a refill - very well played. The Glen View team is like an automatic lob feeder that paints the baseline on 3 out of every 4 lobs . . . unreal. Several points when on for what seemed like eternity. GE comes out aggressive in the 2nd set and quickly goes up two breaks. Vinnie goes for another refill. Once again, Swinney blacks out for about 10 minutes and suddenly Vinnie is serving for the match. GE 7-5, 6-1. Swinford sets a record for fastest consumption of 3 chicken quesadillas and 6 Harp.
GE 3, GV 0

Court 2 has Captain Lu and “Ground” Chuck Snyders paired up for a second time against Murphy and Schwalm. Not a lot on this match because I was distracted from an old guy in corduroys – more on this later. From what I did see, ground Chuck dug back hand screens like he was picking cherries and Lu was doing his thing keeping the ball in play and making timely drives. We go down 3-6 in set one and Captain Lu is beating himself up for not being aggressive enough which proves to be a difference maker in set 2 and we know up sets with a win 6-4. Set 3 is another story and the experience of the opponent takes us down 1-6. We later learn Murphy and Schwalm played series 9 last year and moved down to 12??? Good effort guys!
GE 4, GV 3

Court 4 goes on next featuring Terry Lew and Ciaran vs. Baine and some guy named “Unknown/Default”. After a pleasant warm up (if you know Ciaran – you know it would be no other way than “Pleasant”!) our boys moved over a court to play a retiree father and son team. I talked to the Dad for quite a while before the match and then told Lew and Ciaran that their opponent had little real experience and pointed out them out. Terry says to me “we’re playing the old guy in corduroys?” Unfortunately they sandbagged me and that was not what it seemed. The father/son team was solid and came out strong with a 6-1 win before we really knew what was happening. It seemed our guys were having difficulty finding any momentum with them. The second set saw GE battle tough to 2-2 but the Glenview team pulled away, winning the set 6-2.
GE 4, GV 6

Court 3 has Matt “Ratings” Nielsen and the Bushman again against “Wolverine” Mike Hamp and partner Don “Fran” Tarkington (he looked like him too!). We start warm ups where Ratings is hitting with Fran and Bush is hitting with ‘lil Michigan boy Hamp – I quickly pick up that this kid has a huge tennis background. Michigan boy is driving hard with forehands and back hands and has great touch at the net. Before we start, I tell my partner to be aware that this kid will drive both sides. I can’t tell you what games we won and lost but when set 1 is over we go down 2-6. Matt takes a break and tries to fire me up – I’m pissed going down so badly . . . Little boy Blue smashed our serves continually and we never hit any screens. Set 2 we come out more focused but quickly go down 1-3. At this point something has to change so I go to my spin serve which throws our opponent for a loop. With Matt serving, we switch to the “I” formation and that too messes them up. We see-saw to a 6 all tie and take it in the tie break 7-3. Third set unfortunately is much like the first and we go down 2-6 again. We learn later Lil Boy Blue was a Wolverine tennis stud – he killed us. Next time we need to bring alone team IV’s can of Whoop Ass!
GE 5, GV 9

We all settle in the awesome hut to very good hosts with lots of discussion of all the matches. The atmosphere in the hut was great with tons of stories and laughs. Most guys say it was the most fun match we had but bringing home a victory would have truly made it taste good. Vinnie goes on to say he had wished his match would of gone 3 sets so he could have played more . . . A few pick up games were played with Harp in hand – if not our heads.

After 7 matches we hold on to the last playoff spot. We’ve played the top teams thus far so a break in the schedule is coming.

Series 6 vs. Winter Club

We leave GE for the Winter Club in Lake Forest without our leader Pagey who is in Vegas at a Paddle convention. As we arrive at the Winter Club the setting could not be better. A nice hut a hockey game going on and 3 lit paddle courts all that is missing is a safety village. It is 48 degrees no sign of rain the scent of grilled burgers in the air and Jupiter is in its 10th house it is a perfect night for paddle.

On Court 1 we have T Nelson (T-Bone) / Giff. This ones end pretty quick with a lot of controlled drives coming from the GE pair. T-Bones drive is clocked at 101mph. Only the winter Club would have a radar gun. We end the match quickly we think in 31 minutes 6-1..6-1.

GE 3 WC 0

On Court 2 we have Neli/JJ. This one ends even quicker (27 minutes). This is not even a match. Neli started to play with out his paddle and just uses the back side of his hand. JJ follows suit and just uses his feet. JJ does a roundhouse kick to end the first set. The second set is not much different but they do start using their paddles again except this time neli has both paddles and JJ is caring neli on his back. JJ is doing the MC Hammer shuffle back n forth across the court while Neli is returning lob after lob with both paddles while he sings "You cant touch this" and the second set ends quicker than the first. 6-0...6-1.

GE 6 WC 0

On court 3 we have the match of the night. Connely/Hunter. This dynamic duo is looking to continue their good karma from their win from last week. They are dressed in their traditional Johnny Cash attire all black but this week they add capes. The first set is a long set. The WC team continues to just throw soft shots into the ring of fire as the GE team is backhand to the middle. They lose the first set 4-6. they enter the warming hut to pour themselves a new beginning and it is the right strategy. They take the next set 6-0 and the third set 6-3. Great comeback and win for this team.

GE 9 WC 1

On court 4 we have Hechta/Glavin who both wear glasses. This will come into play later. The first set goes GEs way with precise serving and great lobs! They take the first set 6-4. They then enter the Hut for some beverages. They grab a drink and wonder if there will be any food left as the ct1 and 2 GE boys are eating like it is feeding time on Animal Planet. Now here is where trouble sets in. As they both leave the hut their glasses are fogged up. They cannot see 2 feet in front of them. We guide them back onto ct 4 and it does not start well. Glavin is serving first and he does not know he is facing the wrong way. He serves it into his own back screen and it comes right back at him and thumps him in the chest. He yells great return and moves over to the other side and starts to do it again until Hechta stops him. The rest of the match they just cannot see. There our plenty of "torn boxers" (at least one ball out) and Hechta keeps calling them in because he cant see with his glasses fogged up. We drop the next two sets. GE takes one on the chin 6-4..4-6..2-6. I would take the GE pair 10 out of 10 times if they could see. Next time maybe ski goggles.

A good win for the group after a tough loss the week before. It will be good to have Captain Pagey back next week as he was missed.

2nd GEPTC Mixer Tourney

The purpose of this event is to get as many people out on the paddle courts before the competitive Chicago League begins in early October. As many of you experienced the last go around, we try to make this as evenly matched as possible for all teams.

Certainly the goal is to win, but it’s also important that everyone gets the opportunity to be a part of the competition and have exposure to some pretty high level paddle right here in our own backyard.

That said, we’ve put together four groups which will compete in round robin format. Each team within a group will be required to play one another. Each group has 5 teams, that means that 4 matches need to be played between today and Wednesday, September 30th.

Important: All matches will be 2 out of 3 sets with a tie-breaker played at 6 all in each set. Regular scoring. Each team out there will have an experienced player so if there are any questions about scoring, ask the experienced players.

Once all round robin matches are played and scores are reported, by Wednesday, September 30th we will set up the quarterfinal match ups. The top 2 teams from each group will move on to the quarters.

Quarterfinals to be played Thursday evening, October 1st. Matches will begin at 7 pm with the subsequent matches to follow.

Semis and Finals will be played Saturday, October 3rd and the time is tbd, but likely late afternoon, early evening.

GEPD Platform Membership

We have a Glen Ellyn Platform Tennis Club. Our purpose is to manage the tourneys, clinics, Leagues, and needs of the Platform Tennis Park District Members. Also, we are in the midst of a membership drive to show the Park District that this is a viable community sport (not a pet project) that provides all age groups with winter recreation and social activity. We also will be raising matching funds to add a permanent warming hut and 2 more courts. Our goal is $50k which we have matching dollars to turn that into $200k. We are presenting at the October board meeting on the 6th. We have 50 members currently signed up in advance. The more the better. Every person counts, so I am asking that you call the PD and get signed up. This gets you a Passcode and a Key. The passcode gets you online web access to reserve courts which is required to play. The key gets you in the warming hut/trailer (this comes in October). Mary Defiglia is the Park District manager in charge of the Platform program. 630-858-2462 ext 122. I would not take the time to write this if it wasn’t important. We envision GE as a Paddle Mecca similar to Winnetka and Hinsdale and a revenue source for the Park District.

Solid Turnout at the "work bee" event

We had a solid showing of 15 Glen Ellyn residents/platform tennis enthusiasts at our work bee on Saturday 8/15/09

A handful showed up at 9:00AM to get everything organized while most of the workers arrived at 10:00AM to start staining. Embarrassingly, I did not realize how big of a project this was; thus, many stayed and worked until 1:30PM to complete the job. However, we are pleased to report that the wood is stained and looks great. In addition, we fixed a couple of the boards; however, 2 or 3 of the snow boards have bent supports. Maybe Dave or his crew could get them fixed.

Tournament Finals Recap

The finals were played on Friday.... the weather was good and we had a great crowd to watch Marty/Matt take on the tourney's top seed Andrew / TJ. The match lived up to the hype!!! Marty and Andrew were exchanging wicked serves and killer drives and TJ and Matt were doing a good job chasing the ball down....with great digs and good volleys they did their best to keep the pro's some what off balance. The first set went to Matt/Marty 6-4......on one point, with Marty calling for all the overheads and Matt trying to give Marty plenty of room, the communication broke down...Matt cut left at the net and Marty going back to hit a deep lob overhead bombed one off the back of Matt's head!! The second set went to a tie breaker with Andrew and TJ holding on to win 8-6.....The crowd was thrilled as the match was way to exciting to see it end in two sets!!
The third set did not disappoint the rowdy crowd...long points...big serves and some incredible digs had the fans cheering for more and they got what they wanted a third set tie-break! The fans thought that Marty/Matt would have the edge as TJ's face was starting to turn that delicate shade of purple he displayed in the semi's...things were tied up at three a piece when Marty Jr. and his three sisters decided they had seen enough and kicked in the side door and marched on the court demanding their fathers attention....Mom moved in quickly and order was restored...the break was enough for TJ/Andrew to get a quick blow and rallied to take the set and match 8-6...Great Job guys it was fun to watch.I would like to thank Ryan and Marty for helping to put this event together!! We tried to make this as fun and competitive as possible and I believe we accomplished both. Stay tuned for more of this in the fall as our goal is to sign up a minimum of 200 members!!Pagey

Tournament Rolls On!

Lewandowski/Glavin vs Burke/Smith. Everybody was finding their legs after spring break and some time off. At 2-2 in the first it was a tight first set. Burke came up with some scrappy winning points and was able to hold serve at 4-2. Burke/Smith take the first 6-2. Glavin was hitting the ball well from both sides but just wide or long as the warmer weather and time off proved costly. Lewandowski returned well and had some great droppers. Sportsmanship awards to both guys as they gave up winning shots once for touching the net and once for reaching over and contacting the ball. They played a bit tight in the second and could not get that first volley in and hold serve. 6-2, 6-0 to Burke/Smith

McPherson/Peterson vs Burke/Smith. A-Train came out firing, but Burke/Smith hold and break to go up 2-0. Paul has game. He played the backhand and returned strong and handled the screens well. Anthony did not miss another ball this set. McPherson/Peterson 6-2. The second set is a dog fight. Lots of scrappy athletic play, great shots, a couple bonks (I have not forgotten kid!), and good net exchanges. Burke is running everything down and fighting back from his corner. Peterson is handling returns like a pro. Anthony is all over the court with well-timed blitzes and poaches. After fighting off several match points, Paul gets broken at 6-5 and we force a tie-break. M & P are up 4-1, 5-2, then 6-5 with Mike serving to Anthony at match point!. A perfect paddle serve ace as it hits the tape and falls over!!! Paul owns the next return and they stay up 7-6. Paul serves for the match again but 2 serves go long. Smith holds one point and the set at 9-7 in the breaker. Everyone is having a blast and worn out! M & P go up 4-2 and A-Train is serving for the match at 5-4. Burke starts off the game with a shot down the alley for a winner. B & S get the break. Burke holds with some gutty serving and great net play and go up 6-5. The ball bounces Burke/Smith’s way as a volley sails long and an overhead finds the net tape giving them the break and the match. 2-6, 7-6(9-7), 7-5.

It was a sunny afternoon with winds gusting to 40 mph tuff to keep the balls in play.......perfect day for paddle!!!Big thanks to Rich.... he is what paddle is all about, instead of pounding JJ and I with his wicked serves and bomb drives he was more concerned with teaching leo the basics of the game, Always encouraging and always teaching.....it was a fun match and I think leo learned a ton!

Engel / Nielsen defeat Connolly / Walor: 2-6; 6-3; 7-5

A good battle, with Nielsen serving it out in a long tense last service game to close it out. Didn’t miss one serve in the 5 or 6 deuce game to close it out. I’ve seen top 10 players fold under that kind of pressure.

Connolly and Walor were picking on Engel most of the night. They were definitely game for this first match and if I were the other group 1 teams I’d be a little scared of what they both bring. Good lefty/righty combo on that team.

Series 6 Wins the title

Up in Wilmette last night for the series 6 finally against Westmoreland. Sky was clear with a little breeze out of the north. Temp was 45 degrees...a perfect night for paddle.We won all 4 courts and won the match 12-1.I would like to congratulate all 20 members of the series 6 team from the Glen Ellyn Platform Tennis Club that played this season, we can all celebrate the first championship in Glen Ellyn PlatformHistory!I would also like to thank Chuck and Ryan for their help with developing our squad this year. If we all follow their lead of teaching the game to the newbys our CLUB will thrive!We will be looking to field 4 teams next year. Series 2 and 6 and two other squads. If you are interested in helping with the formation (captains?) please let Chuck or I know. Please be looking for players to fill our openings for teams!

The four groups for the tournament have been sent out.

Each team will play each team in their group in a best two out of three set match by April 22 at the latest. (Self schedule)

You may want to try and get all four teams in you group out on one night if possible.

The Quarterfinals will be held the night of April 23rd starting at 7:00 PM
The criteria for advancement are 1. Most wins 2. Head to Head result 3. Most games won 4. Fewest games lost 5. Coin toss

Top two teams from each group will advance to Quarterfinals:
7:00 PM Group 1 (winner) vs. Group 2 (2nd)
7:00 PMGroup 2 (winner) vs. Group 1 (2nd)
8:00 PM Group 3 (winner) vs. Group 4 (2nd)
8:00 PM Group 4 (winner) vs. Group 3 (2nd)

The Semi-finals and Finals will be held April 25th in conjunction will a women's round robin, and series 1 demo match. Schedule is currently TBA
